The two-and-a-half minute trailer for
The
Hobbit opens with Sir Ian Holm as the older Bilbo Baggins, and
Martin Freeman, star of The Office television series, playing his younger
counterpart.
It also shows the wizard Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) introducing the dwarves
who will be Bilbo's companions on his great adventure in the two-part
prequel to The Lord of the Rings.
Sir Peter Jackson, who is directing and producing JRR Tolkien's tale of Middle
Earth in his native New
Zealand, is notoriously secretive about the back-to-back filming, so the
trailer offers a rare taste of the production.
The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey, will have its world premiere in Wellington
on December 14 next year, with the second Hobbit film opening in December
2013.
Production studio Warner Brothers has also released a new still of Freeman in
his title role, clutching a staff and staring purposefully into the
distance.
